U.S. private-sector employers added 90,000 jobs in September, according to the latest ADP National Employment Report released September 30, 2026. The increase followed a revised gain of 36,000 jobs in August and exceeded economists’ expectations of roughly 70,000 new positions. ADP said hiring accelerated for the first time since May, led by education and health services and leisure and hospitality.
U.S. private-sector employers added 90,000 jobs in September, according to the latest ADP National Employment Report.
The increase represents a rebound from August, when private employers added a revised 36,000 jobs. September's gain also exceeded economists' expectations of approximately 70,000 jobs.
The September report showed an acceleration in private-sector hiring after several months of slower job creation.
ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson said job creation rebounded after a three-month slowdown, while pay growth remained solid.
The report is produced by ADP Research in collaboration with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab and uses anonymized payroll data covering more than 26 million private-sector employees.
Education and health services recorded the largest increase, adding 55,000 jobs during September.
Leisure and hospitality employers added another 22,000 positions.
Manufacturing employment increased by 17,000 jobs, while construction added 15,000.
Other sectors showed mixed results. Financial activities declined by 16,000 jobs, and professional and business services lost 11,000 positions.
The report also showed continued wage growth.
Median base pay for private-sector workers increased 3.2% from a year earlier. Workers who remained with the same employer saw base pay increase 3.0%, while job-changers recorded a 4.8% increase.
Median gross pay increased 4.7% year over year.
The ADP report provides an independent measure of private-sector employment and is released before the Labor Department's monthly Employment Situation report.
The government report covers both private- and public-sector employment and uses different data and methodology.
The September Employment Situation report is scheduled for release on October 2.
Because the two reports measure employment differently, the ADP result should not be treated as a direct forecast of the government's final September jobs figures.
The September ADP report provides evidence of renewed private-sector hiring after a period of slower growth.
The strongest gains came from education and health services and leisure and hospitality, while several other industries experienced employment declines.
The upcoming Labor Department report will provide a broader picture of the U.S. labor market, including total nonfarm payrolls, unemployment, wages, and other employment indicators.
Private employers added 90,000 jobs in September, marking a notable increase from August's revised 36,000 gain and coming in above economists' expectations.
The figures point to a pickup in private-sector hiring, although the broader condition of the U.S. labor market will depend on additional government data and other economic indicators.
