Vice President JD Vance and Texas Governor Greg Abbott joined Saronic Technologies executives in Brownsville on September 30 for the groundbreaking of Port Alpha, a planned next-generation shipyard at the Port of Brownsville. Vice President JD Vance and Texas Governor Greg Abbott joined Saronic Technologies executives and local officials in Brownsville, Texas, on September 30 for the groundbreaking of Port Alpha, a planned next-generation shipyard at the Port of Brownsville.
The project represents more than $3 billion in planned private investment and is expected by Saronic Technologies to create up to 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade.
Port Alpha is being developed by Saronic Technologies as a large-scale shipbuilding facility designed from the ground up around modern manufacturing methods, automation and software.
The initial site covers approximately 835 acres, with the potential to expand to nearly 4,400 acres as production grows.
Saronic expects the facility to begin initial operations in 2028.
Unlike a traditional shipyard focused on a single type of vessel, Port Alpha is being designed to produce both autonomous and manned ships.
The company says the facility will serve defense and commercial customers and will use modular production and modern manufacturing processes to increase shipbuilding capacity.
At opening, Port Alpha is planned to introduce approximately 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity. Saronic says that would more than double current U.S. commercial shipbuilding capacity.
One of the project's biggest expected impacts is employment.
Saronic says Port Alpha could create up to 10,000 direct jobs over the next decade.
Those positions are expected to include skilled trades such as welding and machining, as well as jobs in engineering, robotics, software development, naval architecture and advanced manufacturing.
The company is working with Texas officials, Cameron County and regional educational institutions to develop technical training and apprenticeship programs for future workers.
The Port Alpha project comes as U.S. policymakers and industry leaders focus on expanding domestic shipbuilding capacity.
Saronic says the new facility is intended to increase the nation's ability to build commercial and defense vessels and provide additional capacity for both conventional and autonomous ships.
The company has also been selected for U.S. Navy-related vessel programs, giving the planned facility a role in future defense production.
The Texas Governor's Office estimates that Port Alpha could generate up to $264.5 billion in economic impact for the state.
Saronic has separately estimated approximately $160 billion in economic impact for the region over the next decade.
These figures are projections rather than realized economic results and will depend on construction, hiring, production and future business activity.
Construction now moves the Port Alpha project from planning toward development.
The facility is expected to expand Brownsville's role in advanced manufacturing and maritime industries while creating opportunities for workers in the Rio Grande Valley.
If construction and workforce plans proceed as announced, initial operations are expected to begin in 2028.
The groundbreaking of Port Alpha marks the beginning of a planned multibillion-dollar shipbuilding project in Brownsville.
With more than $3 billion in planned private investment, up to 10,000 projected direct jobs and the ability to build both autonomous and manned vessels, the project is intended to add significant new capacity to the U.S. maritime manufacturing sector.
The coming years will determine how quickly the facility reaches its planned production levels and employment targets.
